Tip 1: Hand washing is a must.
If you look closely at the care label sewn inside a down jacket, you will find that 90% of them specify hand washing and explicitly advise against dry cleaning. Dry cleaning chemicals can compromise the jacket's thermal insulation and cause the fabric to age prematurely. Machine washing and spin-drying involve twisting and agitation, which can easily cause the down filling to clump unevenly, leading to a loss of shape that affects both the jacket's appearance and its warmth.

Tip 2: Rinse in 30°C water.
First, soak the jacket in cold water for 20 minutes to ensure it is thoroughly wet inside and out. Dissolve the detergent in warm water (30°C), soak the jacket for another 15 minutes, and then gently scrub it with a soft-bristled brush. Use warm water for rinsing as well; this helps the detergent dissolve fully and ensures a cleaner rinse.

Tip 3: Avoid using overly concentrated laundry powder.
If you must use laundry powder, a good rule of thumb is to add 4 to 5 tablespoons per two basins of water. Excessive concentration makes thorough rinsing difficult; detergent residue left in the down can impair its loft (fluffiness) and significantly reduce the jacket's warmth.

Tip 4: Neutral detergent is best.
Neutral detergents cause the least damage to the fabric and down. If alkaline detergents are used and not rinsed out completely, the residue can damage the jacket and leave unsightly white marks on the surface. To remove alkaline residue, add two teaspoons of vinegar to the warm rinse water after the initial two rinses and soak the jacket briefly before the final rinse; the vinegar neutralizes the alkaline detergent.

Tip 5: Do not wring dry.
After washing, do not wring the jacket out. Instead, gently squeeze out the excess water and lay it flat or hang it up to dry. Avoid direct sunlight and ironing, as heat can damage the garment. Once dry, gently pat the jacket to restore the down's fluffiness and softness.
